Michele Lynn Richey
My background in the field of substance use disorders stems from a family history of use with multi-generations. Originating in Maine before relocating to Upstate SC in 1994, I graduated from Lander University with a Bachelor's in Psychology with an Emphasis in Counseling in 2009. I obtained my Master's in Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Additionally, I received my LMSW in 2014 and my LISW-CP to practice independently in 2023. I'm also a National Certified Addiction’s Counselor.
After completing my undergrad internship at the Phoenix Center in Greenville, working primarily in Intensive Outpatient Treatment, I began working at PC's residential treatment program for adolescent boys; White Horse Academy. This opportunity encouraged me to grow as a counselor due to their diverse program of therapeutic techniques, thus opening my eyes to the genius of Experiential treatment. High and Low Ropes Courses, Canine Assisted Therapy, and Music and Art Therapy are just a handful of hands-on Experiential approaches to which I am drawn.
After working in Detox and IOP with the Phoenix Center for several years, I relocated to the Lowcountry in 2016. For the next 3 years, I worked in Hospice. Still, I longed for the community and relationships I had grown accustomed to while working in this field. The look of hope and accomplishment on my client's faces when they discover THEY can be successful in recovery never gets old!
